The Chile vs. Honduras 2010 World Cup match brought Chile its first World Cup win since 1962. The Chile vs. Honduras 2010 match was part of the first day of Group H play, bringing an end to the first set of games atthe 2010 World Cup. It was an amazing finish for Chile, netting the first victory the country has seen since they hosted the 1962 Cup. It was in the 34th minute of the match that Chile scored their only goal, when Mauricio Isla kicked a cross to Jean Beausejour that he tapped in for the goal. It gave Chile a 1-0 lead that they would hold on to for the rest of the match, putting Chile into an unlikely tie with Switzerland atop the Group H standings. It’s only going to get harder from here, though, as Switzerland may have really angered the team from Spain that they upset. Chile had several chances to increase the lead over Honduras, and ended up taking 22 shots during the match (to only 7 from Honduras). It took an amazing save from the Honduras goalie in the 64th minute to save his country from going down 2-0, and that was after Alexis Sanchez of Chile sent a shot wide that appeared to be heading for their second goal. On the great save by goalie Noel Valladares, it was Waldo Ponce that sent a header toward the far post, and appeared to have a goal right in front of him. Valladares dove at just the right time, knocking the ball aside harmlessly, and keeping Honduras in the match. The defense of Chile wouldn’t allow Honduras to get any great opportunities, though, keeping Honduras to just one shot on-goal for the entire match. With the three points they accrue for beating Honduras, Chile is now tied with Switzerland for the lead in Group H. The next matches for Group H take place on Monday, June 21, with Chile vs. Switzerland and Spain vs. Honduras. The Chile vs. Switzerland match will take place at 7 a.m. PST on ESPN, followed by the Spain vs. Honduras match at 11:30 a.m. PST.

Lewis Hamilton started in the pole position and finished first in the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, despite frequent upsets and passing elsewhere down the pack. He took his second victory in a row, and the 13th of his career, winning the race in his McLaren Mercedes and taking the lead of the drivers’ standings after eight races. Hamilton now leads the series with 109 points, and his teammate, Jenson Button, who finished the race in second, is three points behind. Mark Webber, the Red Bull driver who arrived in Montreal ahead in the series, dropped to third position with 103 points. Webber finished today’s race fifth; he had qualified second, but he was given a penalty of five spots on the grid after the team was forced to change his gearbox. Fernando Alonso finished the race third in his Ferrari. “Great job guys, thank you very much for this weekend,” said Hamilton to his engineers over the radio on his wind-down lap after crossing the finish line. “We have to keep pushing hard.” Michael Schumacher, the seven-time world champion, had another inauspicious race after his return to Formula One following three years in retirement. Schumacher started the race in 13th position and climbed to as high as to third before he dropped down in the end to finish 11th. Even though he was given a grid penalty, Webber ended up leading the race for a while. But following his pit stop after Lap 50 of the 70-lap race, he dropped out of contention.
