A small US run Bagram Air base in Afghanistan was attacked by the Taliban early Wednesday which killed at least 10 militants, an American contractor and wounding nine troops, according to a statement released by NATO’s International Security Assistance Force. The attack happened only a day after a deadly bomb attack which killed at least 19 people and injured scores of others in the heart of Kabul. According to Chris Sukach, a US spokesman at Bagram, the attack that included rockets, small arms and grenades targeted a “non-critical building” began at around 4 p.m. The Taliban claimed responsibility for launching the attack and according to Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid, 20 suicide bombers wearing suicide vests took part in the Bagram assault. NATO officials disputed the number. Mujahid told reporters that the suicie bombers stormed the base and four of them detonated explosives at the entrances to allow the other men to move in. Mujahid also discovered that the record “important” was held in the database. U.S. forces said that no insurgents made it inside the base, but blasts and gunbattles raged for eight hours as U.S. soldiers hunted the attackers down in the surrounding fields north of Kabul. They also confirmed that the base was undamaged except for “minor” damage to one building not considered strategically important. NATO is currently preparing for a major operation to restore order in the affected areas of the attacks.
